DAY 3: Sheet Gets Real

Just for good measure - to ensure the class was thoroughly exhausted and impressed by our demonstrations, we demoed wheat pasting, light puppetry, printing relief and screen, and forming HMP on armatures.  I also forced a quick exquisite corpse upon them, which it was agreed was quite exquisite and charming.  Just like us.

Then we leapt right into making, drawing, and discussing projects.  Sparkledy paper, paper airplanes, doll patterns, bike frames, glowing stickers and some loose talk about 5 minute rabbit opera were involved.

May Term Proposals, Light Bulb Screwing-in Party

We are super pumped about the ideas coming from this group.  Track the progress and check out the written proposals, and where were getting some of our ideas - meanwhile, we're moving right into building, printing, making in general.

Some of us pitched in to help with Robin Schwartzman's Northern Spark Project, which involved a whole lot of light bulb screwing in.

DAYS 1.5 & 2: Before, During, Beyond the Sheet

We are covering a ton of ground in this course.  In the first of three weeks, we have covered beating fiber, forming sheets, woodshop, using the lasercutter, printing pronto plates, basic relief and screen printing, low brow construction, wheatpaste and a slew of other junk.

This week has been all about filling the well. We hope students are energized by the limitless possibilities that might result from employing any combination of the new practices we introduce. We took sheets made on Day 1 and printed on them with pronto plates, then tested out rastering them with the laser cutter. Day 3 we would later print to them with wood blocks and screens, and form them to armatures.

The real fun begins when we move into the projects hardcore starting next week.

DAY ONE: Making stuff by stamping stuff on stuff

Before getting down and dirty in the print shop, we opted to get dirty outside first.  Using only leftover screen inks and paints, and whatever we could scrounge to print with, we made a collaborative print - frequently employing our bare hands and feet.  We want this class to be a freeing experience - and therefore very, very dirty (so to speak).

After we were properly primed we headed into the paper studio.  See the following post - but check out our class project and idea spaces on tumblr - and stay tuned via our fb page.
